Nil Santianez. Goya/Clausewitz: Paradigmas de la guerra absoluta. Barcelona: Alpha Decay, 2009. Francisco Goya created the 80 etchings today known as the Desastres de la Guerra during the Napoleonic war and the subsequent restoration of Fernando VII. Their exact dates are not known: three of the plates bear an engraved date of 1810 and are usually thought to be the earliest; the last plates etched were probably those identified as the "caprichos enfaticos," thought to rcflect the repressive political and ideological world of early years of the restoration. The etchings were never published during Goya's lifetime, and although some have read into this the repression of the restored regime, it may also be simply that the artist realized that such graphic depictions of war, especially once past, had little chance of selling. A complete set of proofs with manuscript captions, today housed in the British Museum, had--according the nineteenth century accounts--been presented by Goya to Cean Bermudez so that he could correct the captions. When the plates were finally published by the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in 1863 they were ordered in the same sequence as the Cean Bermudez set. Yet this order does not represent the order of their creation. Early and late plates, early war scenes and late caprichos enfaticos, are intermixed--perhaps to neutralize the vast stylistic differences among them. (1)
